The Graduate School of Public and International Affairs offers professional education for individuals who wish to pursue careers as managers, planners, and policy analysts primarily in the public sector and nonprofit and nongovernmental organizations in the United States and abroad. The 72-credit PhD program prepares students for careers in teaching, research, and consulting in development policy, foreign and security policy, international political economy, public administration, and public policy. An earned master's degree is preferred and students with master's degrees may be awarded up to 36 credits of advanced standing. The curriculum emphasizes interdisciplinary approaches and applied analysis in a policy issue area. The 48-credit Master of International Development (MID) offers majors in development planning and environmental sustainability and in nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) and civil society. The 48-credit Master of Public Administration (MPA) offers majors in public and nonprofit management, policy research and analysis, and urban and regional affairs. The National Association of Schools of Public Affairs and Administration accredits the MPA program. The 48-credit Master of Public and International Affairs (MPIA) offers majors in global political economy and security and intelligence studies. GSPIA is a founding member of the Association of Professional Schools of International Affairs. The 30-credit Master of Public Policy and Management (MPPM) is for experienced professionals who want to develop analytic tools and expand their managerial capabilities. Joint master's degree programs are offered between GSPIA and the Schools of Law (JD), Social Work (MSW), Public Health (MPH), Information Science (MSIS), and Business (MBA). Students are encouraged to avail themselves of graduate area studies certificate programs offered through the University Center for International Studies. These certificates are earned from the Center for Latin American Studies, Center for Western European Studies, Center for Russian and East European Studies and the Center for Asian Studies. Global Studies, a new certificate jointly offered by GSPIA and UCIS, is also available.
