Graduate study in political science is focused on training for the PhD. As part of that training, students also acquire MA degrees, but we do not offer a terminal MA degree. Students choose primary and secondary areas of specialization from among six fields: American Politics, Comparative Politics, World Politics (i.e. International Relations), Normative Political Theory, Political Methodology (including statistical, formal, and, to a lesser extent, qualitative methods), and Mass Political Behavior (which incorporates elements of all of the above, but focuses on citizens as the unit of analysis, rather than institutions or outcomes). We encourage students to undertake coursework in related disciplines and schools, including the Psychology, Sociology, Economics, Philosophy, and Religious Studies Departments, as well as the Graduate School of Public and International Affairs.
