Programs are designed to help students acquire an in-depth understanding of the evolution of French and francophone literature and culture from the middle ages to the 21st century, within the context of the evolution of modernity in its esthetical, philosophical and political aspects. The department offers a doctoral program leading to a PhD in French Language and Literature. Students who don’t already possess a MA in French Language and Literature will complete an MA en route to their doctoral degree. Students may focus on a thematic cluster in Literature and Politics. The French graduate program also admits students interested in completing a PhD in Film Studies with a concentration in French cinema. The Department also offers a concentration in Romance Languages and Literatures (Italian, Spanish, Portuguese). These areas encourage students to develop transversal approaches and to take advantage of the various interdisciplinary programs offered at the University of Pittsburgh (Africana Studies, Cultural Studies,European Union Studies, Gender Sexuality and Women's Studies, Global Studies, Film Studies, Medieval and Renaissance Studies, West European Studies). Each year the department can accept between 2 and 5 new students with financial support in the form of Teaching Assistantships or Teaching Fellowships or Research Fellowships.
