Three major specialty areas are available: 1. human genetics focuses on studying the causes of genetic variation and the implications at the population level; 2. genetic counseling focuses on the development of knowledge and skills for the provision of pertinent genetic and biomedical information to clients so that they can make informed reproductive decisions; 3. public health genetics focuses on phenotypic disease prevention in populations, and devising environmental and occupational interventions to prevent disease in populations. It also addresses society's legal, ethical, financial, regulatory and organizational responsibilities in offering genetic services.
A dual MS/MPH degree program in public health genetics and genetic counseling is available, as is a certificate in public health genetics.
