The graduate certificate in African Studies is designed for students in any department or school within the university who wish to intensify their study of Africa, develop real insights into issues of critical importance in their individual fields of study, and enhance their career opportunities. The program offers students a fundamental grounding in African studies and an international dimension to the study of the peoples and cultures of African descent. Students will investigate their knowledge about African issues and expand their research pursuits through exposure to the major areas of research and knowledge on Africa through coursework and other academic projects such as symposia, lectures, conferences and internships. Students are required to complete 18 hours of course work in African Studies and two years of study of an African language in order to receive the certificate in African Studies, which will also be posted on their final academic transcript.
