The materials science and engineering program offers specialization in various areas of the advanced ceramics, metals, and other engineered materials. Active research in ceramics focuses on high-temperature materials, high-temperature superconductivity, magnetic materials, dielectric materials, ferroelectric materials, and new nano-structured. Other research areas include oxidation of materials and hot corrosion, erosion/corrosion phase transformations, and thermomechanical processing of steels.
