The doctoral degree is offered in four major divisions of anthropology: cultural anthropology, archeology, physical anthropology, and linguistic anthropology. The separate master's degree program offers these same specializations. Several special programs focus the particular strengths of the department's faculty. The program in Ethnicity, Nationalism, and the State recognizes that ethnic politics and nationalist movements dominated the late twentieth century, and will play a huge role in shaping the world in this new century. The Center for Comparative Archaeology supports the comparative study of the origins and development of complex society and brings together students from many parts of the world as colleagues. The Medical Anthropology program, which is separate area of concentration within anthropology, allows students to focus their course work and research on any of a number of issues related to health, illness, biomedicine and non-Western systems of health. A joint degree program with the Graduate School of Public Health allows students to simultaneously complete the PhD degree in anthropology with a concentration in medical anthropology and a Master of Public Health degree in Health Services Administration.
