The Department of Bioengineering at the Swanson School of Engineering combines hands-on experience with the solid fundamentals students need to advance themselves in research, medicine, and industry. The department has a long-standing and unique relationship with the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, and other academic departments at the University of Pittsburgh as well as neighboring Carnegie Mellon University. Our faculty are shared with these organizations, offering our graduate students access to state-of-the-art facilities and a wide array of research opportunities. We currently have greater than 100 PhD candidates, who are advised by more than 100 different faculty advisors, pursuing graduate research across multiple departments and schools. There are five tracks for graduate students, each of which defines a menu of courses to satisfy the PhD requirements. In particular these are: (1)Cellular and Organ Engineering, (2) Biomechanics of Organs, Tissues, and Cells, (3) Biosignals and Imaging, (4) Physiology and Biophysics, and (5) Neural Engineering. PhD research is conducted in these areas according to a student's professional interests.
