The University of Pittsburgh School of Dental Medicine, in cooperation with the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center offers a 36-month anesthesiology residency for dentists. This program prepares the dentist to manage pain and anxiety in the adult, pediatric and special needs patient by using pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic methods. The program begins with one year of training in: general anesthesia, intravenous sedation, pharmacology, physiology and internal medicine at the School of Dental Medicine. Following successful completion of the first year of training, the residents begins a one-year rotation in anesthesiology, internal medicine, and critical care medicine at UPMC Presbyterian Hospital. The final year of study is divided between the operating rooms at St. Margaret's Hospital, Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh and Magee Women's Hospital, as well as three-months at the Dental School for out-patient and office-based anesthesia training. Three residents are accepted per year.
