The Department of Communication Science and Disorders offers two specializations: Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology(SLP). The Department offers masters degrees for students pursuing either a research (MS) or clinical (MA) degree in SLP or a research degree(MS) in Audiology. The MS degree is available to students in both SLP and Audiology who opt to complete a master's thesis (whether in a clinical or non-clinical track in SLP) and to students seeking a non-clinical track in preparation for doctoral study. Students choosing this degree are not required to complete the clinical requirements that are required for the MA degree. The MA program (SLP only) provides students with specialized academic education and clinical expertise in the diagnosis and treatment of individuals with a variety of communication and swallowing disorders. THE MA curriculum exceeds the academic and clinical standards established by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA)and students are eligible to take the national examination and complete the clinical fellowship year leading to the Certificate of Clinical Competence and state licensure (in most states), leading to the potential of clinical practice reciprocity with Australia, England and Canada. The master's program in SLP is also accredited by the Pennsylvania Department of Education. The Department offers a doctor of philosophy (PhD) degree in both areas of specialization. Research doctoral students acquire the necessary academic course work and research experience to ensure that they are well versed in current genetic, anatomic, physiologic, psychologic, and sociologic theories and models as well as research models so as to assume careers as independent researchers, teachers and leaders in world academic, research and industrial communities. See also, Doctor of Audiology (AuD) and Clinical Doctor in Speech-Language Pathology (CScD).
