Both the master's and doctoral degrees are available with specialty areas in structural engineering and mechanics, environmental and water resources engineering, geotechnical and pavement engineering, transportation and construction management and sustainability. The Master of Science degrees in Civil and Environmental Engineering are primarily designed for students with an undergraduate degree in engineering, although students with other backgrounds can be accommodated with specially designed programs. An MS degree can be pursued by a full-time or part-time student in one of three ways: (1) Thesis Option: 24 semester course credits plus a 6-credit thesis; (2) Project Option: 27 semester course credits plus a 3-credit project report; or (3) Professional Option: 30 semester course credit. Students pursuing a Ph.D. degree develop their academic program in consultation with their adviser on an individual basis. The Ph.D. program typically consists of a minimum of 54 credits of coursework and special investigations beyond the bachelor’s degree, plus 18 research and thesis credits. A minor consisting of at least 9 credits taken outside the area of specialty must be included. Satisfactory completion of the preliminary evaluation and the comprehensive and final oral examinations is required.
