The Department offers graduate students the opportunity to employ the full range of sociological theories and methods in the study of two main areas of emphasis: social movements and politics and culture. Coursework, teaching experience, and research training provide students with the skills and substantive background required to evaluate, conduct, and teach sociological research. Theoretical and methodological preparation includes courses in social theory, research design, quantitative methods and qualitative methods. The focus is on the various means of generating, analyzing, interpreting, and presenting new knowledge about inequality and social change. Master's students and doctoral students share coursework in the first two years, and both degrees require completion of a research project.
