The programs offered by the Department of BCHS build upon a common body of public health knowledge, social/behavioral science concepts, theories, and applied research methods, and offer students more specialized training. The Master of Public Health (MPH) degree program prepares researchers and practitioners who can apply social/behavioral theory, concepts, and methods in the design, implementation, and evaluation of public health intervention programs. The program offers a concentration in health education and courses with an emphasis on maternal and child health, women's health, and gerontology. The department also offers three joint programs: PhD in Social Work/MPH; MPA or MID (from the Graduate School of Public and International Affairs/MPH; and PhD in Anthropology/MPH. A Peace Corps Master's International (MPH) track is available. Doctoral Programs The PhD program trains students to develop interventions grounded in the social and behavioral sciences and test them in randomized controlled trials, while the DrPH program focuses on the translation, implementation and evaluation of evidence-based interventions for use in community settings through the department's Institute for Evaluation Science in Community Health. Half of the coursework in the programs will overlap. A commitment to the elimination of health disparities and working with underserved populations will underlie coursework in both programs.
